U.S. Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Label Polisario Front as Terrorist Group

(MENAFN) On Thursday, two members of the US House of Representatives formally introduced legislation in Congress seeking to classify the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization. The proposed bill reflects escalating concerns over the group's activities and foreign backers that threaten regional stability.

Republican Representative Joe Wilson highlighted the geopolitical implications, stating on X, "The Polisario is a Marxist militia backed by Iran, Hezbollah and Russia providing Iran a strategic outpost in Africa and destabilizing the Kingdom of Morocco, a U.S. ally for 248 years."

Joining Wilson in submitting the bill, Democrat Jimmy Panetta emphasized the bipartisan effort to address the security risks posed by the Polisario Front. The legislation’s core objective is to officially designate the group as a foreign terrorist organization, which would subject it to targeted sanctions and counterterrorism measures.

This move signals growing US attention to North African conflicts and the influence of foreign powers like Iran and Russia in the region, with potential implications for longstanding alliances and counterterrorism strategies.
